AlunaGeorge Do Not Mince Words on ‘Mean What I Mean’
British dance-pop duo AlunaGeorge debuted their latest sultry summer single, “Mean What I Mean,” on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show Tuesday.
The track finds the pair partnering with budding MCs Dreezy and Leikeli47, both of whom deliver quick, vicious verses over George Reid’s rapturous pop house production. Singer Aluna Francis, meanwhile, offers another engrossing vocal performance, alternating between a blunt, kiss-off cadence and a divine diva belt.
In an interview with Mac, Francis explained that “Mean What I Mean” was inspired by a situation where she denied a person’s advances, only to have them try to tell her she was just playing hard to get.
“That’s where I pull my lyrics from, at the moment, like if I went back into that situation, what would I have needed to handle it better,” Franics said. “And that’s where this song really comes from. And it was really nice because I got Dreezy and Leikeli, and they backed me with their really great verses. So I just feel like this is a full package of support, and celebrating the fact that we do know what we mean — people just need to listen it.”
“Mean What I Mean” follows two previously released singles, “I Remember” and “I’m In Control.”AlunaGeorge are scheduled to release their second album, I Remember, in September. It follows their 2013 debut, Body Music.
