See Dierks Bentley & Elle King’s Brooding ‘Different for Girls’ Video
“Different for Girls” takes a sharp turn from Dierks Bentley‘s previous single, the humorously vengeful “Somewhere on a Beach.” But the country star, whose new LP Black is a concept album about relationships, says the two songs’ characters are the same people.
“The guy in ‘Beach’ ends up being the guy who sings ‘Different for Girls,'” he tells Rolling Stone Country. “Maybe he is seeing the world differently.”
“Different for Girls,” a duet with pop sensation Elle King, is about the extremely different measures men and women take to get over a breakup. “She don’t text her friends and say, ‘I gotta get laid tonight,'” Bentley sings in the first verse. “She don’t say, ‘It’s OK, I never loved him anyway.’ She don’t scroll through her phone just looking for a Band-Aid.”
King joins Bentley in the song’s black-and-white video, which instead shows the woman scrolling through her phone looking at old photos of her ex, while he knocks back shots with friends at a bar. While he eventually finds comfort with a new woman, she eventually finds solace in her friends.
King is one of several female collaborators on Black, along with Maren Morris, Jessi Alexander, Natalie Hemby and Hillary Lindsey. Explains Bentley, “You start hearing some of these other female voices on the record and the album takes on a bigger idea of just a young man’s journey from being free to being in a relationship.”
