David Nail, Wife Catherine Detail Fertility Struggles in ‘Fighter’ Video
David Nail’s new album, Fighter is easily the most personal group of songs he’s ever released, full of revealing details about his hometown, his marriage, his relationship with his father and especially the answered prayer that was the birth of his children in December 2015 (twins Lawson and Lillian). But even the loving lyrics he wrote for a song called “Babies” can’t tell the whole story.
For that, the David and wife Catherine put their “Fighter Story” on film, letting fans in on their years-long struggle to conceive, the ultimate decision to try In Vitro Fertilization and all the heavy emotions that come with it. In a video released this week [watch below], they explain what they went through, from desperately wanting children and trying unsuccessfully for so long to finally hearing their twins cry for the first time.
The video is part of a series featuring “fighters” from all different walks of life, and Nail hopes that by sharing their stories others will be inspired to keep trying for whatever it is they truly want. To that end, he stopped by the Today show to tell hosts Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb that it’s already been happening. Just before singing the first single from Fighter, “Night’s on Fire,” Nail explained that as a songwriter he puts his stories down on paper in an almost selfish way, just trying to work through his own problems. That they end up meaning so much to others is a happy accident. Check out the performance below.
