See ‘Nashville’ Cast’s Joyful ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’
Talk about reality TV — members of the Nashville cast teamed up with celebrated artists JD Souther (himself a former character on the show), Mark Collie and Pam Tillis for last week’s (July 13th) installment of the live-streaming web series Skyville Live. The evening celebrated the “Magic of Music City” with originals and covers from the singers and actors, capped off with an all-hands rendition of Joe Cocker’s take on The Beatles’ classic “With a Little Help from My Friends.”
Along with Souther, Collie and Tillis, the tightly arranged and well-practiced finale featured multi-talented actor/singers Charles Esten, Chris Carmack, sisters Lennon & Maisy Stella and Clare Bowen with her fiancé, singer/songwriter Brandon Young. Lennon & Maisy put an intriguing vocal spin on the tune’s first verse, followed by the bright tones of Souther, Bowen and Tillis in the next. Then Esten stepped up and nailed the iconic hit’s big, screaming bridge, while Collie and Tills brought things back down to Earth. Meanwhile, Carmack wailed away on his guitar the whole time, showcasing the broad array of performing skill the real Nashville has on tap at any given moment.
With the whole group filling the intimate Skyville stage, the communal moment really was a group effort, with the spirit of the tune shining through. Check it out above.
