Steven Tyler on the ‘New Rock & Roll’: The Ram Report
“Country is the new rock & roll,” Steven Tyler told Rolling Stone Country last summer, and that has since become his motto. The Aerosmith legend has planted new roots in Nashville, crafting his first solo album in Music City and immersing himself in the country music scene.
“Country songs really spell out what’s on a guy’s mind in no uncertain terms. Rock & roll can be a little more aloof,” says Tyler of his attraction to the genre. “But country is changing. Jaren Johnston and the Cadillac Three and Florida Georgia Line are proving that you can go any which way. Modern country might add a little a cappella or raps or heavier beats. God knows Brad Paisley plays guitar like a motherf—-r. . . Everyone is trying to stretch out.”
Out tomorrow (July 15th), Tyler’s new LP, We’re All Somebody From Somewhere marries his raspy, unmistakable vocals with relatable lyrics and countrified sonics. He’s already released three songs from the project: the soaring “Love Is Your Name,” breezy “Red, White and You” and funky, feel-good title track. He’s testing out those and other new tunes on the road this summer, on his Out on a Limb tour. Tyler caused a stir earlier this summer by saying in an interview that Aerosmith’s 2017 tour will be their farewell trek. The legendary rockers’ manager has since come out clarifying that they are not breaking up.
