Hear Whiskey Myers’ Gritty ‘Lightning Bugs and Rain’
Texas-based Southern rock outfit Whiskey Myers are currently hard at work on the follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 album Early Morning Shakes. The new project, titled Mud, and is being recorded under the guidance of in-demand producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell) and will be out September 9th.
“Lightning Bugs and Rain” is the first taste of what Mud will sound like and certainly embodies the dirt and grit suggested by the album title. Big and bold with sunny splotches of horns, the track shimmies with an undulating, bluesy guitar riff and a stuttering drum break. Principal songwriter Cody Cannon makes his pitch to a woman by describing a private, hilly spot where they could go and be and free from any prying eyes. There, he says they’ll be free to do whatever. “There ain’t nothin’ on this mountain, but lightning bugs and rain,” he sings.
“[It’s] a fun summer song, and Dave [Cobb] really helped us give it that extra kick,” says Cannon. “This the first time we have had horns on one of our songs, and it really sets the mood — it definitely gives off the vibe we had going in the studio.”
Whiskey Myers will spend the first half of July playing gigs in their home state of Texas and then hit the road for festivals including Faster Horses in Brooklyn, Michigan and Windy City Smokeout in Chicago. They also have supporting dates ahead with hard rock group Shinedown’s Carnival of Madness tour.
