Watch ‘Hamilton,’ Broadway Stars’ Pre-Tonys Carpool Karaoke
James Corden serves as host of this year’s Tony Awards in New York, and since the Late Late Show host didn’t know his way to the Beacon Theatre, he employed Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda to sit shotgun and partake in some Carpool Karaoke.
Together, Corden and the current Rolling Stone cover star sang the influential musical’s “Guns and Ships,” with Corden handling the role of Lafayette, and talked about the Tony Awards. While Miranda was nervous before the 2008 ceremony when his In the Heights was nominated because a Tony win would help secure the longevity of that show, he’s less anxious this time around since Hamilton is already a hit of epic proportions. In the Heights ended up winning Best Musical, with a Hamilton win in that category all but fated.
While driving along the streets of New York, Corden and Miranda spied three more Broadway stars on the way to the ceremony – Shuffle Along‘s Audra McDonald, Fully Committed‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and She Loves Me‘s Jane Krakowski – to give them a ride. (The Tonys don’t happen until June 12th, but that’s nitpicking.)
The car full of Broadway talent together sing Rent‘s “Seasons of Love” – which draws an loud “awww” from the passengers, leaving Corden to remark, “That was the most Broadway response to hearing an opening of a song” – as well as Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
At one point during the ride, Corden asks Ferguson, who co-stars on the hit TV show Modern Family, which he prefers more, “Theatre… or money?”
The trip around New York City concludes with a triumphant, exhilarating rendition of Les Miserables‘ “One More Day.”
‘Star Wars’ superfan, Candace Payne, a.k.a. “Chewbacca Mom,” drove James Corden and J.J. Abrams to work on ‘The Late Late Show.’ Watch here.
