Vocalists included Megan Hilty, Sean Hayes, Frankie Grande, Fran Drescher, Billy Porter, Cynthia Erivo, Chita Rivera, Alice Ripley and Norm Lewis, among others. The diverse choir of multiple generations of Broadway performers belted the song as images of tributes at Stonewall Inn and the Orlando nightclub Pulse, where the shooting occurred, flashed across the screen.
The shooting happened on the morning of June 12th, the same day as the Tony Awards. The Broadway community paid several touching tributes to the victims of the tragedy during the ceremony, and host James Corden even launched the show with a moment of recognition. Later in the show, winners Frank Langella and Lin-Manuel Miranda turned their speeches into impassioned tributes.
