Watch Mark Hoppus Discuss Blink-182’s Legacy in Spotify Documentary
Blink-182 is the subject of a new documentary through Spotify titled The Drop. In the first part, Mark Hoppus discusses the inspiration and process behind the band’s new album California as well as the legacy of the pop-punk icons.
In between shots of people biking, surfing and skateboarding around California, Hoppus began by discussing the appeal of California to the band and to their new album in particular. “All these people come to California with the dream and the possibility that anything can happen and does, but there’s this also this weird, dark underside of living in Los Angeles and California that I like,” he explains of the city and state’s dichotomy.
Hoppus reflects on how the band has evolved, having started out wanting to write “fast, punk rock, catchy songs” and that the band continues to hope that they’ll grow as writers and artists. Bringing in Matt Skiba to replace Tom DeLonge and producer John Feldmann, the band had a new outlook on what they could do in the studio.
“Legacy is a subject that’s come up a lot in the past few years,” he said. “It was crazy important to us that we keep creating new music. We didn’t ever, and don’t ever, want to become a greatest hits band.”
