See Kelsey Waldon’s Atmospheric ‘All by Myself’ Video
Kelsey Waldon’s 2014 debut The Goldmine announced the Kentucky singer-songwriter as a disciple of Tammy and Loretta, with yearning vocals and hints of barroom twang. But on her new album I’ve Got a Way, due August 12th and produced by Michael Rinne, Waldon marries the steel guitar and her old-school country stylings with something darker. The record is a look inside oneself, often with stark revelations.
For the album’s first single, the thumping “All by Myself,” Waldon returned to her hometown of Monkey’s Eyebrow, Kentucky, to film the accompanying video. It’s eerie stuff, as ominous as True Detective (Season 1, of course), but also informed by a sense of longing for home.
“It was very important to me to shoot parts of this video in Monkey’s Eyebrow. We literally shot right on the land that I grew up on. I wanted to showcase the power and beauty that I feel from that environment, and a place that means a whole lot to me,” Waldon tells Rolling Stone Country. “The song is not meant to be a statement, lecture or sermon from me, but hopefully a statement for everyone as a whole. It is meant to be encouraging and positive, embracing the things that make you who you are and being proud of that. The power is only within ourselves, you know.”
Waldon, one of Rolling Stone Country‘s inaugural Artists You Need to Know, will kick off a summer tour in Brooklyn on July 27th.
