Carrie Underwood Records a New ‘Sunday Night Football’ Theme Song
“Somethin’ Bad,” Carrie Underwood‘s duet with Miranda Lambert has been turned into something new — the latest opening theme song for NBC’s highly rated Sunday Night Football. Sung by seven-time Grammy winner Underwood, the new theme “Oh, Sunday Night” mixes country, rock, and pop sung to the tune of Underwood and Lambert’s Number One hit from 2014.
According to Fred Gaudelli, executive producer of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football are, the “Church Bells” singer came up with the idea earlier in the off-season. He notes, “When we got into the recording studio in Nashville, the song instantly came to life, and will be a dynamic addition to our show.”
“I love being part of the Sunday Night Football family and can’t wait for the fans to hear the new theme song,” says Underwood, who is in her fourth season performing the SNF open for NBC. Sunday Night Football, telecast on NBC for 10 seasons, has been the highest rated prime time series for the past five. The new season debuts when the New England Patriots play the Arizona Cardinals on September 11th.
Upon its release, “Somethin’ Bad” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for Underwood and Lambert. Underwood worked with the songwriters — Chris DeStefano, Brett James, and Priscilla Renea — rewriting the lyrics and turning the song into the Sunday Night Football theme. “Oh, Sunday Night,” was produced by Mark Bright and Chris DeStefano.
“Oh, Sunday Night” replaces “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” the SNF theme song from 2006-15, which was set to Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” In 2013, Underwood’s version of “Waiting All Day” debuted, switching gears from the previous rendition of the tune performed by Faith Hill.
Carrie Underwood says it’s taken time for her to become confident in sharing songwriting ideas.
