Watch Sentient Robots in Creepy ‘Westworld’ Trailer
Robots populating a futuristic theme park begin to develop sentience in the creepy new trailer for HBO’s Westworld, a 10-episode sci-fi/thriller premiering on the network in October.
The clip opens with humanoid Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) sitting in a Lynchian dark room, asked by an eerie voice if she’s ever “questioned the nature of [her] reality.” From there, the preview reveals the foreboding Western landscapes of Westworld, a theme park where customers can indulge their depraved desires for sex and gun-slinging.
But the park’s operators begin to worry as the robots become more life-like than expected. “I’m terrified,” Dolores confesses. “I feel spaces opening up inside of me, like a building with rooms I’ve never explored. I think there may be something wrong with this world. Something hiding underneath.”
Westworld is an adaptation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name. HBO’s adaptation is written, directed and executive produced by Jonathan Nolan, best known for co-writing several films – including The Dark Knight and Interstellar – with his brother Christopher. The creative team also includes writer/executive producer Lisa Joy and executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk.
The one-hour drama stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden. HBO describes the series as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.”
