Hillary Scott Reveals Tragic Inspiration Behind ‘Love Remains’ Album
Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott has revealed the details behind her upcoming family-gospel album side project, Love Remains, and it includes heartbreaking personal tragedies.
Arriving on July 29, the album features the whole Scott family – Hillary; her country star mother, Linda Davis; producer and songwriter father, Lang Scott; and her little sister Rylee – teaming up on 13 songs that are a mix of classic hymns, newly written songs and spiritual covers, all produced by bluegrass/gospel legend Ricky Skaggs. Although the project was originally conceived as a five-song “thank-you” to family and friends for their support after the passing of Scott’s grandfather in 2011, it eventually became much more.
Speaking on Good Morning America Monday, Scott announced that the inspiration behind the album’s faith-filled first single, “Thy Will,” was a miscarriage she suffered in the fall of 2015.
“This is something that is not talked about very often,” Scott said as she dabbed tears away from her eyes. “I also feel like there’s this pressure that you’re just supposed to be able to snap your fingers and continue to walk through life like it never happened.”
Scott co-wrote the touching song with Emily Weisband and Bernie Herms in the middle of “experiencing everything that comes with a miscarriage,” she explained. “So it was my most raw place that I could’ve ever been when this song truly poured out of me.”
At the CMA Music Festival just over a week earlier, the Lady A singer called “Thy Will” “the most personal song I’ve ever written, and probably most personal song I ever will write,” but said it was already having a positive impact, despite its heartbreaking origin. Fans have been “baring their souls” on social media in response to the track, Scott said, and supporting each other along the way.
“When you have the courage to share your story it gives others the courage to do the same, and that’s where healing comes from,” she said.
Indeed, according to the Scott family Love Remains is not intended to be a sad record, and in an official statement about the project Hillary said the experience has only brought her family closer together.
“The process of making this album has been not only creatively inspiring, but I’ve also really been able to grow as a person,” she said. “We’ve had this intense concentrated amount of time as a family together, which has been so special. With all that we’ve gone through together – the highs, the lows – to be able to process all of that together, to heal together, to grieve together, to laugh, to cry, all of those things. . . it’s just been such a continuation of solidifying the strong foundation that we have in our family.”
