Watch Lady Gaga’s Passionate, Tearful Tribute to Orlando
Lady Gaga gave a powerful speech during a Los Angeles vigil for the victims of the shooting in Orlando Sunday morning. The singer broke down and tears while speaking in front of City Hall.
“We mourn the tragic loss of the innocent, beautiful people,” she said in front of the large crowd lighting up the vigil with their cellphone flashlights. “Let’s all today pledge an allegiance of love to them and to their families who are suffering so deeply. They are sons and daughters. They were fathers and mothers. They are all our brothers and sisters.”
Gaga stated that she would “not allow my anger and outrage over this attack to overshadow our need to honor those who are grieving truly for their lost ones.”
The “Born This Way” singer has long been a supporter of the LGBT community but has supported many causes and political initiatives directly related to the community as well. She has spoken at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., has publicly protested the U.S. military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and has appeared at numerous Pride celebrations. She reaffirmed her stance as an ally to the community during her speech, which also included her reading off every victim’s name to the solemn crowd. “You are not alone,” she added.
In New York City, Nick Jonas also offered words of support as an LGBT ally. The singer spoke in front of Stonewall Inn. “My father, a minister from New Jersey, shaped my view that love is love, that we are all equal,” he said. “No matter who you are, or where you’re from, or where you’re going in life, you have the right to love and be loved. So yesterday, thinking about the families of the victims and the lives lost, I just thought that could be my friend. That could be my people.”
