Sturgill Simpson Adds Large List of Cities to World Tour
Sturgill Simpson is super sizing his world tour. The singer-songwriter began travels in support of his chart-topping concept album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth earlier this month and has just added a sizable list of cities to the trek — including Brooklyn, Denver and Seattle. Tonight’s sold-out gig in Lexington, Kentucky, begins a 61-show run that goes through November.
In addition to his North American stops, Simpson will hit Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, the U.K. and the Netherlands on this tour. And he will perform back-to-back shows in several cities — including Lexington, Nashville, Los Angeles, Denver, Toronto and Vancouver — due to fan demand.
Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide To Earth was written and sequenced as a letter to his son, who was born in 2014. The musician produced the LP himself and wrote all of its original tracks without co-writers. (The only tune he didn’t pen is a haunting cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” a song he says delivered a pivotal message during his teenage years.)
“Due to the personal nature of the album I decided it was best not to collaborate with anyone,” he tells Rolling Stone Country. “I knew I wanted to make a concept record in song-cycle form, like my favorite Marvin Gaye records where everything just continuously flows. I also wanted it to be something that when my son is older and maybe I’m gone, he can listen to it and get a sense of who I was.”
Tickets for several stops on Simpson’s tour — including Nashville, Chicago and Louisville — have already sold out. Tickets for the newly-announced shows go on sale May 20th. See the full list of cities and dates, plus get ticket information here.
