Hear Flume, Beck Team for Dreamy ‘Tiny Cities’
Australian producer Flume releases his much anticipated second LP Skin this Friday, an album packed with an all-star assortment of guest vocalists like Beck, Vic Mensa, Tove Lo, Raekwon, Vince Staples and more. Flume and Beck appeared on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show Wednesday to unveil their collaborative cut, the LP’s closing track “Tiny Cities,” ahead of the album’s arrival.
On the track, Beck plants his chanted, hypnotic vocals atop Harley “Flume” Streten’s dreamy, dense soundscapes. As the duo revealed in their interview with Lowe, the collaboration took place when Flume was working on his new LP in Los Angeles, where the producer and his laptop hopped in an Uber to Beck’s house. After listening to music, Beck plugged his microphone into the laptop and “Tiny Cities” was born.
“We worked with a lot of the same programs, and I started working with computers pretty early on in my career, coming from a singer-songwriter background,” Beck said of his connection to Flume, one of Rolling Stone‘s 10 New Artists Defining the Sound of Now. “We were using Pro Tools … a lot of these programs right when they came out, before what they were able to do was really invented, before people took this technology and created new forms of music out of them.”
Beck also commended the producer for “taking these musical instincts and engaging with these programs in a way that’s really fresh.”
Skin, out May 27th, also features guest vocalists AlunaGeorge, MNDR, Kai and Little Dragon.
