DJ Shadow Plots North American Tour, Unveils Gritty, Funky New Song
DJ Shadow has announced a packed North American tour this fall and released another new song, “Bergschrund,” from his upcoming album, The Mountain Will Fall.
Shadow will kick off his trek September 27th at the House of Blues in San Diego and wrap with a two-night stand at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn October 14th and 15th. Ticket information is available on DJ Shadow’s website and a complete list of dates is below.
As for “Bergschrund,” the spaced-out instrumental finds DJ Shadow working with German techno composer and producer Nils Frahm. The track incorporates a kaleidoscopic array of synth sounds that retain a taut funkiness — even during a surreal, head-spinning midsection — and play perfectly with the track’s classic hip-hop percussion.
“Nils Frahm is an insanely smart composer,” Shadow told The Fader. “He created a sinewy, gated vintage synth line which I then expanded upon, hopefully to complimentary effect. Our track is called ‘Bergschrund,’ an obscure German word for a particular type of crevasse, or ice cliff, usually found on mountains at very high elevations.”
“Bergschrund” follows three previously released The Mountain Will Fall songs, the title-track, “Swerve” and “Nobody Speak,” featuring Run the Jewels. The album marks DJ Shadow’s first since 2011’s The Less You Know, the Better and is scheduled to arrive June 24th via Mass Appeal Records.
Prior to his North American tour, DJ Shadow will play a slew of European dates in July, as well as two shows in Mexico in August. He’ll also perform at Pitchfork Festival Paris October 27th.
