Dwight Yoakam to Release Jack White-Produced Songs
Dwight Yoakam has partnered with Jack White’s Third Man Records for a new 7″ release as part of the label’s Blue Series. Available June 10th on vinyl and digitally, the release offers up two new tunes from Yoakam that were recorded in Nashville with White. Previous Blue Series recordings have featured Courtney Barnett, Beck and Tom Jones, among others.
Side A is a raucous take on “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Another Day,” which was written by Tommy Boyce and Steve Venet and originally recorded on the Monkees’ 1966 debut album. That will be backed by a version of Harold Dorman’s “High on the Mountain of Love,” which was been recorded by Johnny Rivers, the Beach Boys and Charley Pride, among many others. Yoakam was backed on these recordings by Lillie Mae Rische, Daru Jones, Cory Younts, Dominic Davis and Fats Kaplin.
Yoakam’s most recent album Second Hand Heart was released in 2015 and continued the more electric guitar-driven stage of his career that began with 3 Pears. A more optimistic record than many of Yoakam’s bummed out releases, Second Hand Heart has some autobiographical elements but still allowed the singer to play around with his ideas.
“I’m not a journal keeper and never have been,” he told Rolling Stone Country. “I have random thoughts and interactions in my personal life that become catalyst for song ideas, but then that’s where the journalizing stops. It is, basically, a thematic catalyst. What’s really important is that they live beyond me.”
This weekend, Yoakam will bring his hip-swiveling live show to a two-night stand at the Venetian in Las Vegas, followed by a June 5th show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.
