Rolling Stones Film ‘Exile on Main Street’ Headed for Big Screen
'Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell With the Rolling Stones' is casting roles of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
A new feature film about the Rolling Stones is in the works. Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell With the Rolling Stones will be directed by Andy Goddard, who has helmed several episodes of PBS’s Downton Abbey. The film is currently looking to cast actors in the roles of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Deadline Hollywood reports.
The film is based on Robert Greenfield’s 2008 book focusingthe recording of Exile On Main Street at Nellcôte, a villa in southern France, before the release of the legendary double LP in 1972. Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced purchased the rights for the book in 2012.
Richards described the process of making Exile On Main Street in a conversation with Rolling Stone. “It was a strange atmosphere,” he remembered. “It was very, very murky — and dusty. It wasn’t a great environment for, like, breathing. Mick Taylor and I would just peer through the murk at each other and say, ‘OK, what key is it in?’ It was very Hitleresque — the last days of Berlin sort of thing.”
Despite these less-than-ideal conditions, the album stands up for the guitarist. “Listening to [Exile] all the way through now, I think it still holds up on its own … ‘Torn and Frayed’ I kind of liked. I love ‘Sweet Virginia.’ And ‘All Down the Line’ was a killer for me, to be able to pull that off.”
