Watch Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters Mock Breakup Rumors in New Video
Foo Fighters breakup speculation abound this week after the band’s mysterious tweet on Tuesday stated there would be an “official announcement tomorrow night. Stay tuned.” The tweet followed a Page Six report from Monday that claimed there was “tension” between bandmates Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins and that Grohl may be going solo, which likely helped ignite the rumors. Despite the report and Grohl’s performance sans his bandmates at the Oscars last Sunday, Foo Fighters fans can rest easy as the tease was simply to put the breakup rumors to rest via the release of a clever video they shared via an “Official Band Announcement” tweet on Wednesday.
The seven-minute clip opens with real-life headlines about Grohl’s appearance at the Oscars and more headlines about the Foo Fighters’ possible breakup and the speculation about Grohl possibly going solo.
Scenes switch between Grohl, who in the clip is considering a solo run, and his bandmates, who are considering other singers for the band, with suggestions that range from Gwen Stefani and Prince to Phil Collins and Justin Bieber.
After Grohl attempts an earnest piano-led ballad, with lyrics that hilariously focus on him being alone (“And now I’m free to be me, just me, not those other three or four or how many more,” he sings) and the band auditions a non-Foo-Fighters-type artist (don’t want to give too much away with the cameos, but it’s a hilarious choice), the video culminates with the real announcement. “For the millionth time we’re not breaking up. And nobody’s going fucking solo!” is written across the screen.
Last November, Foo Fighters released a free download of their Saint Cecilia EP accompanied by a letter to fans, which hinted at the band taking a break. Grohl mentioned that the people and place behind the EP enabled “our band to take one, big final breath before the curtain closes,” and added, “Maybe these songs are the bread crumbs that will help us find our way back when it’s time. We could use a nice wander through the woods right about now. Another empty journal, another tap on the shoulder … those things are never far behind. It’s what lies ahead in those woods that excites me now…. So tonight, as I sit in my Berlin hotel room on our final tour for this album, counting down the days until we return home, I can’t help but wonder when we will see each other again. Who knows? But, with everything Foo Fighter-related, it will only be when it feels right. And that’s a feeling that’s easy to feel.”
The video didn’t address if they’re still on hiatus, but it did put to rest any notion of the Foo Fighters breaking up or Grohl going solo.
