Watch James Corden’s Melodramatic ‘Lemonade’-Inspired Monologue
James Corden explored the trials and tribulations of creating a late-night monologue in a parody of Beyoncé‘s Lemonade on The Late Late Show Monday.
Corden dutifully recreated numerous shots from the pop star’s HBO special while recounting in soft, melodramatic voice overs his obsessive attempts to please the audience night after night with appealing, formulaic jokes. “This is in the news, that’s in the news, what else is in the news?” he asks. “You guys see this? Do you guys see — me?”
Further capturing Corden’s angst were Lemonade-esque title cards for the various monologue conventions, including the dreaded “Trump Joke,” “A New Study” and the requisite “Truth Bomb.”
“A new ice cream shop opened at a former Massachusetts funeral home,” Corden deadpanned. “They’re calling it, ‘Casket Robins.’ Did that make you laugh, baby? That’s one of my own. Does that make you laugh, like Jimmy with the good hair?”
For good measure, Corden even gave out his own sugar-heavy lemonade recipe, closed with a goofy “Single Ladies” joke and, of course, donned a flowing blonde wig and yellow dress and gleefully slammed a baseball bat against a bunch of televisions to the sweet sounds of “Hold Up.”
