Kanye West, the Strokes, the Killers to Headline 2016 Governors Ball
Kanye West, the Strokes, the Killers and Beck will headline the 2016 Governors Ball Music Festival, which takes place Friday, June 3rd through Sunday, June 5th at New York City’s Randall’s Island Park. The event will also feature performances from Robyn, of Monsters and Men, Death Cab for Cutie, Miguel, M83, Bloc Party and Big Grams.
Over 60 artists are scheduled for the three-day event, including Haim, Chvrches, Two Door Cinema Club, Miike Snow, Father John Misty, Jamie xx, Gary Clark Jr., Eagles of Death Metal, Chet Faker, De La Soul, Thundercat, Against Me!, Lord Huron, Action Bronson, Mac Miller, Courtney Barnett, Joey Bada$$, Cold War Kids, Bat for Lashes and Albert Hammond Jr.
Last year’s epic Governors Ball was highlighted by a meme-making Drake performance, Deadmau5 recovering from mood-killing blackouts for a hit-filled set, Florence Welch hugging a fan during her band’s late-afternoon gig and “Weird Al” Yankovic winning over the crowd with his requisite parody jams.
In addition to music, Governors Ball 2016 will feature art installations, lawn games and dining options from restaurants and food trucks. A confirmed list of vendors is forthcoming.
The Strokes’ last Governors Ball performance came in 2014 with a resilient homecoming show – their first gig in three years. The band members have mostly focused on other musical projects since their last LP, 2013’s Comedown Machine, but singer Julian Casablancas revealed last year that they’ve started work on a follow-up. “It’s the first time we’ve been exclusively writing since Comedown Machine,” the frontman told Noisey. “We’re planning on recording stuff. I still think we could do cool things and I’ll do that.”
