Watch Stephen Colbert Race NASCAR Champ for Pinewood Derby Supremacy
In case you haven’t heard, Kyle Busch is the champion of the NASCAR world.
After missing the first 11 races of the season recovering from a broken leg and foot, Busch defied all the odds to quality for the Sprint Cup championship on Sunday. And while he continued his miraculous run by blowing away the competition in the Chase – preventing Jeff Gordon from riding off into the sunset as a champion in the process – many believed he was undeserving of the honor because he missed a good chunk of the season.
That, of course, is absolutely ridiculous, because winning is winning.
Anyway, now that Busch is a champion and all, his celebration tour is in full swing. On Monday, he stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to show off his sparkly new trophy (which, as Colbert pointed out, looks like it would be terrible to drink out of) and prove himself as the best driver in the world by racing Colbert on the Pinewood Derby track.
“As the Sprint Cup champion and the winner, not only do you get this wonderful trophy,” Colbert said. “But more importantly, Kyle, you have qualified for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert Cinnamon Toast Crunch 400.”
It turns out Busch can’t lose, even when it comes to racing toy cars on a miniature track that has been “verified by the International Pinewood Derby governing body.” And for all his hard work, he received an equally difficult cup to drink out of. Oh, wait, that’s just the same trophy. Either way, good job, Kyle.
