Watch Bill Nye Weigh In on ‘Star Wars’ vs. ‘Star Trek’ Debate
Star Wars vs. Star Trek: Even with all the strife in the world today, it still goes without saying that this is obviously the greatest and most pressing conflict of our time (and one exacerbated to infinity by J.J. Abrams’ defection from one space franchise to the other). Now that the hugely anticipated release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is right around the corner, the scales are ready to be tipped. So when celebrity scientist Bill Nye dropped by the Rolling Stone office to discuss his new book about the perils of climate change, we couldn’t resist the chance to ask one of America’s brightest minds for his thoughts on the issue that continues to divide our galaxy.
Unsurprisingly, the Science Guy prefers the series that revolves around the laws of nature and the powers of logic to the one that hinges on the telekinetic gifts of midi-chlorians. “Star Wars has magic in it!,” Nye declared with a hint of disgust in his voice. “The Force is like a ghost or magic or religion,” he continued, echoing a preference recently expressed by fellow scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
On the other hand, Nye had much kinder things to say about Star Trek: “It’s an optimistic view of the future with science. Anti-matter contained in magnetic fields, real physics… [in Star Wars] there’s an invisible thing that has superpowers, but in Star Trek they didn’t do that.”
Watch the video above to hear everything that Nye had to say on this controversial subject. And while we all wait for star peace, The Force Awakens will open in theaters on December 18th.
