Timbaland Plots Hip-Hop Musical ‘Opera Noir’ Based on Final LP
Timbaland is behind a scripted hip-hop television musical, Opera Noir, that derives from his upcoming LP of the same title. The iconic beat-maker will executive produce the project with Leftfield Pictures, Variety reports.
Timbaland, the current musical supervisor for Fox’s Empire, told Rolling Stone that Opera Noir would be “[his] Purple Rain solo album.” “I have no features on it,” said the rapper-producer. “It’s the most innovative work I’ve ever done. It’s all about truth and what’s going on around us. It’s about my personal truth: It’s one of the things that MediaTakeOut will care about, but I’m telling you what happened. And just how I look, dropping all my weight, and how I look like a whole different person now, you’re gonna really understand. It’s about truth and what the world is facing, and we don’t even realize.”
Opera Noir will follow a young musician’s rise to the top and hardships along the way – including struggles with poverty, substance abuse and crime, said the report. The format of the project isn’t solidified and could either be a standalone like Fox’s recent Grease Live! or limited series.
