Watch Mastodon, ATDI, QOTSA Supergroup’s Dark ‘Starlight’ Video
Gone Is Gone – an experimental rock supergroup featuring members of Mastodon, At the Drive-In and Queens of the Stone Age – launch into deep-space with new single, “Starlight.” The band, masked in silhouette, performs the track in an eerie, frenetic video.
“Emptiness is here,” sings Troy Sanders over synth pads and Tony Hajjar’s nuanced drumming. “No control, losing all sight of hope/ One thing that I see/ My image is staring back at me.”
“Starlight” showcases a more textured style than the band’s first single, stoner-metal powerhouse “Violescent,” which the quartet unveiled last month. Both tracks feature on the band’s eight-track debut EP, Gone Is Gone, out July 8th via Rise Records.
Gone Is Gone originated as an offshoot of Hajjar (At the Drive-In) and Zarin’s joint work on movie trailer and film scores. In 2012, they recruited Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age) and Sanders (Mastodon) to flesh out their compositions.
Sanders and Hajjar recently spoke to Rolling Stone about their creative approach.
“The thought behind this band is to combine what most of us know from many years of being in touring/recording entities and our love of scoring,” Hajjar said. “Mike and I have had the privilege of being part of some amazing movie trailer campaigns and scored the game Splinter Cell: Blacklist together as well. Our goal is to be able to do more of this within this project … The goal is to be able to compose remotely, if needed, on film, trailers, or on anything else that comes up … It feels good to know that all this music will see the light of day soon.”
