Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, One Direction Lead 2014 AMA Winners’ List
Although Katy Perry spent the American Music Awards on the other side of the Pacific, the Prism singer was still the night’s biggest winner, taking home three trophies to lead the pop field. One Direction also scored three AMAs, while Iggy Azalea and Beyoncé each won in two categories. Taylor Swift was the recipient of the first Dick Clark Award for Excellence, which was presented to her by Diana Ross.
Perry, who delivered her acceptance speech from Australia – where the Prismatic World Tour is currently stationed – took home Single of the Year, which went to “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J. Perry was also named the Favorite Female Artist in both the Pop/Rock and Adult Contemporary divisions. Meanwhile, on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, that broadcast officially confirmed that Perry would be the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX halftime performer.
One Direction were the evening’s other big winners, grabbing three awards for Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for Midnight Memories. Azalea earned two AMAs: Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop’s Favorite Artist and Favorite Album for The New Classic. Beyoncé won the same two awards in the Soul/R&B division for her eponymous album.
Aside from all the awards, the real draw of the AMAs were the unique performances, from Swift’s show-opening “Blank Space” to One Direction’s laidback “Night Changes” to Jennifer Lopez and Azalea’s booty-shaking finale. Other performers included Charli XCX, the “Bang Bang” trio of Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Fergie, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Blige and a beamed-in Garth Brooks. However, the real highlight of the AMAs was a throat lozenge commercial starring Waka Flocka Flame.
