Watch Kanye West Serenade Daughter in Heartwarming ‘Only One’ Video
Kanye West visited Ellen Thursday to premiere the music video for “Only One,” his first Paul McCartney collaboration and a song inspired by his daughter North West. The video, directed by Spike Jonze, opens up with West singing “Only One” in a soggy field obscured and silhouetted by fog, a frame that’s visually similar to the rapper’s recent live performances. However, after spending his Yeezus tour performing from a distance – which both captivated and infuriated the Bonnaroo crowd – we finally get to see Kanye sing up close again once North West enters the picture. It’s as if his daughter is breaking down the wall he constructed between himself and the audience, with the rapper casually whispering lyrics into his daughter’s ear before they walk together back into the field.
In his interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the daytime host asked West about the title of his upcoming album. “I don’t know yet. We’re still trying to find it. Trying to find the vibe,” West said. “This transition from what I felt when I did Yeezus to what I feel now, and we’re just creating, so we haven’t found it yet.”
West talked about how being a husband has changed him and made him “a better person.” DeGeneres happily points out that West seems “less angry” since his marriage to Kim Kardashian. “I was going through my version of the Terrible Twos,” said West. “My daughter, she wants to express herself but she just doesn’t have the words for it. For me, there’s so many things I want to do with film and clothing and I just didn’t have the words or the resources or the backing or the perception that I could do it being a rapper.” West also credits his Adidas deal with “allowing him some oxygen.”
