Skrillex Channels ‘Groundhog Day’ in ‘Doompy Poomp’ Video
Just what does it take for a guy with a mullet and cop shades to get a bank loan? That is the never-ending question in Skrillex‘s video for the Recess track “Doompy Poomp,” and it’s no coincidence that the clip – and its perpetual déjà-vu– debuted on Groundhog Day. Like the Bill Murray flick, the video’s protagonist finds himself starting over each time his application is denied, tweaking his approach, from wearing leopard briefs to attempting a full-on heist, all while encountering the same rogues’ gallery each time.
French directors Fleur and Manu helmed the clip, in conjunction with the Creators Project, much to Skrillex‘s delight. “Fleur and Manu are some of my favorite directors and artists out there, period,” he said. “I have always wanted to work with them. A lot of my fans don’t get this song and a lot of them hate this song as well, so that’s why I thought it would be even more cool to do something with Fleur and Manu.”
The producer described the track as “a really weird song and more of a joke I made a while ago.”
“This crazy loop, weirdly evolving made us think of this journey,” Fleur and Manu said, explaining their vision of the video. “A guy goes into a bank asking for a loan. Whatever happens he always ends up with his application denied. Every time the result doesn’t end in his favor, he ‘bends reality’ to try again and the loop continues.” A special site created for the video says that a “mash it” version of the clip would be available soon.
In other Skrillex video news, the DJ recently put out a behind-the-scenes video for his superjam at 2014’s Bonnaroo, which featured appearances by the Doors’ Robby Krieger and A$AP Ferg. And last month, he put out a K-Pop-inspired video for Recess’ “Dirty Vibe,” which featured appearances by Korean artists G-Dragon and CL.
