ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons Ventures Into EDM With David Guetta
ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons is crossing over into dance music territory, thanks to a recent, unlikely collaboration with David Guetta.
As Billboard reports, the guitarist met up with the EDM producer in Ibiza after his band’s recent European tour for a fruitful exchange of their diverse areas of expertise. “I wanted to know how they did certain things, and of course they were badgering me to bring the guitar to the forefront,” Gibbons said. “They said, ‘Y’know, the only thing missing in dance music is a good guitar player.’ I said, ‘Let’s see if we can bring the two together and make it shake.'”
Gibbons said that the exchange brought forth eight or 10 complete tracks, which should see the light of day sometime soon. And although he acknowledges that fans will probably be surprised by his foray into electronic dance music, he reminded them that ZZ Top hasn’t exactly shied away from taking similar risks.
“A lot of people have overlooked the fact that one of the things that made (ZZ Top’s) Eliminator so interesting was the opportunity to go into that experimental side of things and fool around with the coolest new toys that could be found in the recording studio,” he said. “I’m always fascinated by that, so my time in Spain was very fruitful.”
ZZ Top just kicked off their joint tour with Jeff Beck on Friday night in Missoula, Montana. The band are celebrating their 45th anniversary together this year and recently marked the occasion with a new career-spanning compilation, The Very Baddest of ZZ Top.
