Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert Win Early CMA Awards on ‘Good Morning America’
The early bird gets the CMA trophy.
Early Wednesday morning, nearly twelve hours before the official kickoff of the 48th Annual CMA Awards, two awards were announced during a live taping of Good Morning America. Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert‘s “We Were Us” was named Musical Event of the Year, beating out stiff competition from Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s husband-and-wife duet, “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s.” Meanwhile, Dierks Bentley‘s “Drunk on a Plane” took home the trophy for Best Music Video of the Year.
To celebrate the win, Urban performed a mini-concert outside of Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Fans reportedly camped out overnight for spots in front of the stage, and Urban — who took the stage in the pouring rain at 7:45 a.m., a la Gavin Rossdale’s water-soaked performance of “Glycerine” during a 1996 Bush concert — repaid their dedication with an emotional, stripped-down version of “Stupid Boy.” Later, after closing things out with a full-band performance of Fuse‘s “Good Thing,” he walked over to the security fence and spent nearly a half hour with his audience, taking rainy picture after rainy picture with a seemingly infinite string of camera phones.
Lambert showed up to the Good Morning America taping, too, where we she accepted the Musical Event of the Year award with Urban and also announced a new partnership with Ram Trucks. We hope those vehicles come with a “three on a tree” column shifter…
