Hear Screaming Females’ Surprisingly ‘Family Friendly’ Jam ‘Wishing Well’
Since Screaming Females are best known for their aggressive punk rock and Marissa Paternoster’s guitar heroics, it was hardly a surprise when Steve Albini agreed to record the band’s April Live at the Hideout. The light touch of new single “Wishing Well,” however, is a little less expected.
“I’m certain that many listeners will consider this song a ‘departure’ for us, but really, we’ve never had a set formula as to what style of music we ought to be playing,” says Paternoster. “When we first started playing it live, people seemed to take to it immediately. People would always ask, ‘Hey play that song about the wishing well or whatever it’s called!'”
An initially lackadaisical tune that strolls toward a smashing hook, the song will be released tomorrow on 7-inch vinyl and will be available at the merch table during the band’s fall tour, a cross-country trek that includes 33 shows in 37 days and stretches from Olympia, Washington, to Gainesville, Florida. For those outside of that range, “Wishing Well” can be also be pre-ordered online.
“I vaguely recall my wonderful aunt mentioning that we finally had written a song she liked,” adds Paternoster. “So if you’re in the market for a family-friendly Screaming Females song, this is your chance.”
