Run the Jewels Share ‘Meow the Jewels’ Preview, Add Lil Bub as Guest
Months after Run the Jewels‘ El-P and Killer Mike pledged to remix their acclaimed Run the Jewels 2 using only cat samples, El-P took to Twitter to offer up a preview of Meow the Jewels and announce that the reworked LP had secured a very special feline guest: Internet sensation Lil Bub.
“Just got a library of sounds from the great @IAMLILBUB. its on,” the rapper tweeted Friday afternoon, followed by “Thank god the money is going to charity because meow the jewels is going to be the single silliest fuckin record ever recorded.” On Instagram, El-P also shared some brief snippets of what Meow the Jewels will sound like. Let’s just say it lives up to its title:
Back in September, before Run the Jewels 2 even arrived to become one of the Best Albums of 2014 and Rolling Stone‘s Best Rap Album of 2014, fans bandied together to spearhead a Kickstarter lobbying the hip-hop duo to rerecord their new album using only cat samples. El-P endorsed the ridiculous project as long as some proceeds from the album go to charities that help support “the families of those who have lost their lives to police brutality this year” and as well as charities that help neglected animals.
With El-P’s approval, the Kickstarter quickly surpassed its $45,000 goal, and artists like Just Blaze, Zola Jesus, Prince Paul, Dan the Automator, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and Alchemist all signed on to contribute to the remix album. However, the biggest guest so far is Lil’ Bub, the waddling, tongue-hanging feline that has taken the Internet by storm. All Meow the Jewels needs now is Grumpy Cat and it’s certifiable supergroup.
No word yet when the newest Marvel superheroes will release Meow the Jewels.
