Jay Z, Jack White Team Up for ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ Vinyl
Jack White‘s Third Man Records has prepared a limited-edition vinyl box set of Jay Z‘s 2013 LP, Magna Carta Holy Grail. The release, designed by the album’s cover art designer, Brian Roettinger, includes eight seven-inch records in a clothbound binder, along with scratch-off pages – inspired by “the theme of redacted government documents” – that reveal photos and lyrics. The set is limited to 1,000 copies and will be available March 20th to celebrate the expansion of the label’s flagship Nashville store.

The seemingly incongruous rap and rock icons have a long history. As Rolling Stone reported in a 2014 cover story on White, the duo have worked together on several unfinished tracks, though White added, “I’m not sure he liked them.” In 2010, the former White Stripes frontman told UK GQ he’d worked on an “incredible” song with the rapper. “I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while, and he immediately came out with words for it,” White said. “It’s unbelievable-sounding.” As of 2015, the pair haven’t released any of said tracks, but at least they’re collaborating in a different way.
White is definitely a major Jay Z fan. During his performance of “Icky Thump” at the 2014 Forecastle Festival, he included a snippet of the rapper’s anthemic “99 Problems” and Dick Dale’s surf-rock staple “Misirlou.”
Earlier this month, Jay Z’s Project Panther Bidco officially completed its $56 million acquisition of Swedish company Aspiro and its streaming services WiMP and Tidal. This followed an earlier block from Aspiro’s minority shareholders.
