Stromae Plots East Coast Dance Party With New Tour Dates
Belgian dance-pop star Stromae has announced an East Coast leg of his tour for September. He’ll begin his trek across North America with appearances at two South by Southwest showcases later this month before playing a number of club shows along the West Coast, alongside Coachella, in April. Following the newly added September dates, he’ll headline a show at Madison Square Garden — his biggest stateside show yet. A full itinerary is available below.
The Belgian singer-songwriter has become a dance-pop phenomenon in recent years, selling millions of copies of his albums Cheese and Racine Carrée and recruiting Kanye West and Angel Haze for select tracks.
Much of Stromae’s appeal lies in his ability to combine light, danceable beats with complex, introspective lyrics. His songs tackle harsh subjects not typically related to dance music, including the plight of AIDS and his absent father who was killed during the Rwandan genocide. “Who decided that when you dance you don’t have to think?” Stromae told Vulture. “I’m not making music for intelligent people or dumb people. I’m just making music for people.”
With “Papaoutai,” Stromae had an international hit that reached number one on iTunes in 18 countries and has earned more than 230 million YouTube views. Most recently, he appeared alongside Haim, Q-Tip, Pusha-T and Lorde on “Meltdown” from the Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack.
Tickets for the East Coast leg of Stromae’s tour will go on sale 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, March 14th via his Facebook page.
