Watch Will Ferrell and Chad Smith Join Forces to Cover the Rolling Stones
Will Ferrell and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith put aside their doppelganger-fueled rivalry on Friday night to join together on a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Woman.” As Consequence of Sound reports, the pair rocked the classic track as part of the elegantly-named supergroup I Pissed My Pants, which also included country singer Brandi Carlile, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, and Stefan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band, during Ferrell’s Cancer for College benefit at Seattle’s University of Washington campus.
The “eerily-similar”-looking Ferrell and Smith first took the stage together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this past May for a drum battle that also raised money for Cancer for College, along with Little Kids Rock. Although Ferrell won the drum-off for his performance of “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” the result apparently left Smith unsatisfied.
In a post on Facebook earlier this month, Smith promoted the Cancer for College event by stoking the flames of rivalry. “Will Ferrell claims he’s coming to Seattle on Sept. 19. I’ll bet he pops off about his alleged ‘Drum Off’ victory,” he wrote. “I just might have to be there to call him out on it and settle the score once and for all. The only way you will know for sure is if you are actually there to see it with your own two eyes.”
In the lead-up to May’s drum battle, Ferrell hinted to Rolling Stone that an epic feud was just getting started. “It may be something too powerful for the audience to even handle, so it may just be an one-time event,” the comedian said. “Man only went to the moon once, right? But it could become the beginning of a rivalry that will go on until the end of time.”
The group returned, sans Ferrell, to also perform the Rolling Stones’ 1968 classic “Jumpin Jack Flash.” (Footage courtesy of Lenz/Skerritt Media.)
