Hear Bad Company’s Lost ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’ Alternate Take
Forty years ago, Bad Company followed their self-titled debut with the chart-topping, five-times platinum Straight Shooter. “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” the record’s second single, has since become a fixture of classic rock radio, and a new deluxe edition of the album exhumes a different version of the track. Hear this take below – although the guitars don’t kick in with the strength of the original, they are more present in the verses, which have a slight Southern-rock vibe.
Aside from “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” the reissue’s bonus disc includes a previously unreleased rendition of “Shooting Star,” a new mix of “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad” and two entirely unheard songs: “See the Sunlight” and “All Night Long.”
In Rolling Stone‘s original review of Straight Shooter, Ed Naha wrote that the record retained “the spontaneous combustion of the earlier album” and “managed to refine [Bad Company’s] musical energy, give it sharper direction and come up with fistfuls of apparently innocuous but totally effective hard rock surprises.”
For Naha, “Feel Like Makin’ Love” offered further evidence that the band had “a brand of music uniquely their own”: “Forsaking the constant thunderthudding drone motif of ’74 in favor of a more textured approach, the group uses subdued acoustic guitar and tight vocal harmonies during most of the verses, saving the harsh electrical shocks for the head-slamming choruses.”
The Straight Shooter deluxe edition will be released April 7th on Rhino and can be pre-ordered here.
