Hear Thurston Moore and John Moloney’s Heavy, Unforgiving ‘Full Bleed’
Over the last decade, Thurston Moore has collaborated with John Moloney on a handful of different projects in various capacities. In 2007, he recruited the drummer to play on his Trees Outside the Academy solo LP, then released Z, a record by Moloney’s Sunburned Hand of the Man, on his label Ecstatic Peace!. Five years later, they reunited as part of Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, and now they’re preparing to put out their fourth record as Caught on Tape, an unrelenting noise duo known for their extended high-volume freakouts.
Below, listen to “Full Bleed,” the album’s title track and a marked departure from their early work. Where those previous three LPs featured unnamed songs that sprawled across an entire side or CD, this tune is a concise three-and-a-half-minute blast of energy. In a joint statement, Moore and Moloney explain the shift: “We titled them to identify them as distinct ‘songs’ because that is what they need to be to survive in this fucked landscape of politician dung patrol.”
Last year, Moore angered black metal fans when he gave another provocative statement in a Full Bleed press release, claiming that such music was “made by pussies of the lowest order.” He later told Rolling Stone that the line was taken out of context.
“Black metal, it doesn’t even consider itself music,” he said. “In fact, it doesn’t want to be confused with any kind of music because it’s something else entirely. It’s a voided concept from its start [laughs]. It’s all about complete disintegration of existence. It’s a music that uses the elements of rock instrumentation but it’s so anti-everything that, for me, it doesn’t matter what you say about it because it doesn’t exist. I figured I would just write something ridiculous about it.”
Full Bleed will be released on February 10th and can be pre-ordered here.
