Watch Dave Grohl, Perry Farrell Cover Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan
Hours after teaming up with Zac Brown for a quadruple-guitar cover of Black Sabbath‘s “War Pigs” for Late Show With David Letterman, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins headed downtown to cover the Rolling Stones‘ “Miss You” and Bob Dylan‘s “From a Buick 6.”
As Courtney Love, Michael Stipe, Brown and Rachael Ray looked on at New York’s McKittrick Hotel, the duo joined rock photographer Danny Clinch and his Tangiers Blues Band onstage to celebrate the release of Clinch’s new book Danny Clinch: Still Moving. Preservation Hall Jazz Band provided sporadic horns on a spontaneous, shambolic version of “From a Buick 6,” which found Grohl ceding his frontman duties to New York rocker Jesse Malin.
The duo would stay onstage for a rambunctious version of “Miss You,” as Clinch enlisted Perry Farrell and Farrell’s wife Etta to handle backup vocals on the Stones classic. (Farrell had taken on lead vocals for “Sympathy for the Devil” earlier that night.) Grohl and Hawkins have a long history with the song, as Hawkins’ metal covers group Chevy Metal frequently performed it during their sets and Foo Fighters inserted the song into their setlist as late as this past summer.
The event spotlighted Clinch’s long career, as a separate room functioned as a makeshift gallery showing Clinch’s portraits of Bob Dylan, Green Day, Willie Nelson and Tupac Shakur, among many others. Earlier this year, Rolling Stone spoke to Clinch for some behind-the-scenes tales of some of his iconic photos, including Johnny Cash, B.B. King and Radiohead. “These photographs offer a little inside look that a lot of people don’t get to see,” Clinch said.
Still Moving, which featured a cover shot of Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder during recording sessions for his 2011 solo album Ukelele Songs, was released earlier this year.
