Watch Sting Sing ‘Message in a Bottle’ With No Doubt at Global Citizen Festival
No Doubt played their first show in two years on Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park. During the band’s encore, Sting took the stage to trade lines and harmonize with Gwen Stefani on their cover of the Police’s 1979 jam “Message in a Bottle.”
It’s not the first time the former Police frontman has performed the song with Stefani. During the halftime show at the 2003 Super Bowl, the two collaborated on the tune to close out the event.
This year’s Global Citizen Festival, which also featured performances from Jay Z, Carrie Underwood, Tiësto, the Roots and fun. marks the third annual concert for the Global Poverty Project. The event seeks to raise awareness and provoke action to combat extreme poverty across the world as the United Nations General Assembly meets in New York. “It’s a great way to get us back on stage,” No Doubt co-founder and bassist Tony Kanal told Rolling Stone over the summer. “It was such an honor to be asked to play this particular concert. It’s unacceptable that over 1 billion people live in extreme poverty, and it’s got a pretty eclectic lineup, which reflects the event’s true spirit of diversity.”
In Other No Doubt news, the band were just announced as headliners for the U.S. launch of the Rock in Rio festival, set to take place in Las Vegas over two weekends in May 2015. As for Sting, his musical The Last Ship makes its Broadway debut at the Neil Simon Theater on September 29th.
