Kevin Spacey Pranks Clintons in ‘House of Cards’ Birthday Spoof
Noted House of Cards binger William Jefferson Clinton is turning 68 on Tuesday, so the Clinton Foundation recruited Kevin Spacey to join Hillary Clinton in a goofy video short commemorating the occasion.
Spacey steps into character as Frank Underwood in the spoof, which finds the scheming political player bored with the Washington D.C. summer. “I like to entertain myself by having some fun with my predecessors,” he explains, before calling up the former Secretary of State and doing his best impersonation of the 42nd U.S. President.
Spacey/Underwood tries to get Clinton to reveal what she’s getting her husband for his birthday, to which the potential 2016 presidential candidate gives the now-familiar reply: “I told you, this is a very personal decision that I will make when I’m ready.” After Spacey suggests buying an elephant and tries to put out the name “Frank” as a contender for Chelsea’s baby name, Clinton reveals that she’s onto him. The sketch closes with a sinister House of Cards-style text exchange with Bill that indicates the former president was a party to the conspiracy.
The Netflix political drama has previously attempted to draw a sitting president into its sphere as well. In December, shortly before House of Cards unleashed its second season, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings tried to enlist President Obama for a cameo. The President demurred, but has revealed himself to be a fan of the show.
House of Cards is currently filming its third season.
