Jenny Lewis Unearths Rare Recordings for Limited-Edition Record Store Day Single
Black Friday just got a little brighter.
On November 28th, Jenny Lewis will release Pax-Am Sessions, a seven-inch vinyl single featuring two alternate performances of songs from her newest solo record, The Voyager. The single is one of several releases hitting the racks this week in celebration of Record Store Day, which began holding its annual Black Friday sale — an offshoot of the springtime Record Store Day event, held every year on the third Saturday of April — in November 2010.
While most of The Voyager was produced by Ryan Adams and Mike Viola, Lewis turned to outside producers for help on a handful of tracks. Her boyfriend and occasional bandmate, Johnathan Rice, produced “You Can’t Outrun ‘Em,” while fellow genre-bending folkie Beck put his own stamp on the album’s kickoff single, “Just One of the Guys.” Pax-Am Sessions will feature the original recordings of both songs, as captured by Adams and Viola. The single’s title refers to Adams’ personal studio in Los Angeles, where he also tracked his self-titled solo record and Butch Walker’s upcoming Afraid of Ghosts.
Pax-Am Sessions isn’t Lewis’ first Record Store Day release. Days after she played Coachella’s 12th annual festival with her short-lived side project, Jenny and Johnny, Lewis celebrated Record Store 2011 by releasing a seven-inch recording of “Love Hurts,” originally performed by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. As a participant in Black Friday’s Record Store Day offshoot, she joins artists such as First Aid Kit, Neil Young, Wilco and Conor Oberst.
