Charli XCX Hijacks School Bus, Crashes Prom in ‘Break the Rules’ Video
Charli XCX‘s latest single, “Break the Rules,” is an anti-pep-rally ode to “getting high and getting wrecked.” Fittingly, the track’s new video finds the singer playing a high school rebel, hijacking a school bus to hit up a lingerie store and crashing the prom dance (which features a cameo from actress Rose McGowan as a ruler-smacking chaperone). The highlight is the grand finale – a playful twist to a Stephen King horror classic.
As the school bell rings, Charli and her misfit crew begin their adventure, making silly faces into the camera as they dance and mime the lyrics (“I don’t wanna go to school / I just wanna break the rules / Boys and girls across the world / Putting on our dancing shoes”) to the bass-heavy track. Charli shared the song last week, as she announced details of her second LP, Sucker. She previously tweeted news that she’d finished the album and linked to an Instagram post that included a picture of herself floating in a pool while holding a massive, heart-shaped lollipop.
Sucker is out October 21st via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records. Back in March, the singer told Complex that the album will feature collaborations with Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij and Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. She also talked about the LP’s youthful passion in an interview with DIY.
“I remember when I first began writing it, I wanted to write an album that I would’ve been obsessed with when I was 14,” she said. “I would love to see a punk revolution, and loads of 14-year-old girls with shaved heads. I would love for girls to be able to celebrate this record.”
