The Band Perry ‘Snake’ More Musical Influences Into the Studio
From their innocent, acoustic-based debut single, “If I Die Young,” to their raucous, hard-edged recent hits, “Done” and “Chainsaw,” the Band Perry have always stretched the boundaries of country music. Backstage at the CMT Awards, where “Done” won the Group Video of the Year award, siblings Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry revealed their varied playlist.
“We’ve been hooked on that DJ Snake and Lil Jon song, ‘Turn Down for What,'” said Neil. “Also, Avicii is really great. We love how he mixes organic instruments with electronica.”
“And we’re listening a lot to sounds, actually, just as much as what the singer is saying,” added Reid. “That’s where we are in the moment: ‘What sounds really good?’ So, a lot of deejay stuff and hip hop.”
Kimberly added that she and her brothers are also going “back to our old roots, with the Rolling Stones, Queen, Bob Dylan and some of our old favorites. We’re attracted to very aggressive sounds right now.”
Still, the Perrys remain coy over whether the new record will indeed be a sonic mix of country, hip hop, electronica and classic rock. But one thing they will reveal is that the new project will try a little tenderness to balance its aggression.
“We’re trying to have more romance about this new album,” Kimberly told Rolling Stone Country at CMA Music Fest. “We are definitely ping-ponging between things again… but we’re allowing more time for creative flow, too.”
