‘Girls’ to Premiere New Music From Grimes, St. Vincent
In addition to being one of the best comedies on television, Girls is also a must-watch for music fans, as the series regularly debuts new tracks from beloved artists. Last season, Beck, Jenny Lewis and Miguel all lent then-unreleased cuts to Lena Dunham’s HBO show, and for Girls‘ fourth season, music supervisor Manish Raval has lined up new songs from St. Vincent, Grimes and Family of the Year, according to Billboard.
Season Four of Girls will also feature well-known cuts from Charles Mingus, Chet Baker and Patsy Cline, but it’s the song debuts that are the marquee musical moments. St. Vincent‘s “Teenage Talk” will close out one episode, while Grimes‘ “Entropy,” co-written with Bleachers frontman and Dunham’s boyfriend Jack Antonoff, will highlight another episode’s closing party scene. Family of the Year, a Los Angeles indie rock group that created Oscar buzz for their track “Hero,” featured in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, also contribute a new song titled “Carry Me.”
In an interview with Billboard, Raval explained how he acquired the exclusive tracks. “I said to St. Vincent’s people, ‘We love Annie [Clark], and she and Lena are friends. Is there anything laying around?’ They sent us a demo of a song called ‘Teenage Talk’ that she hadn’t released yet and it was amazing,” he said. “Lena flipped for it.” In the case of “Entropy,” Raval quickly claimed the Antonoff-Grimes track after Dunham played him a demo of the song over the phone.
“We instantly said, ‘That’s ours, don’t give it to anyone,'” Raval said. “It ends one of my favorite episodes ever — a big party event leads us on a very melancholy note but there’s something so awesomely fun and energetic about this track that really plays against the moment.”
