Kira Isabella Tackles Widespread Date Rape Problem in New Video
“Who are you going to blame, the star of the game or the no-name girl in the freshman class?” Canadian singing sensation Kira Isabella sings in “Quarterback,” a song about a young girl who loses her virginity – and her dignity – at the hands of a football player, who then posts elicit photos of her on the internet.
“A great song makes you feel something and can cause you to open your eyes, mind and heart,” Isabella tells Rolling Stone Country. “This song confronts assault and bullying on such a grand scale that anyone who has ever been bullied will be able to relate to it on some level.
“‘Quarterback” is so well written that you walk away feeling the hurt, anger, fear and complete aloneness of the lead character,” continues the 20-year-old singer. “You’re able to walk in her shoes and feel her desperation and emptiness.”
“Quarterback” was penned by Marti Dodson, Bobby Hamrick and Rivers Rutherford at a time when several football players were in the news for alleged date rape incidents, including Florida State’s Jameis Winston and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger (both of whom were cleared of all charges).
“It was on my mind,” says Rutherford. “As a father of two daughters, one who’s going off to college, it just felt like something that needed to be said.”
Rolling Stone Country premieres the new video for “Quarterback” with an alternate – and sadly more realistic – ending than the previously-released video. Watch above.
