Artist to Watch: Dai Burger
Who She Is: A Queens rapper and sometime-singer with downtown sass, fly-girl style and a posse of like-minded ladies.
What She’s Done: On her 2014 mixtape In Ya Mouf!, Burger stakes fearless claim on her right to be a boss, traversing nasty/funny devotionals to lady pleasure (“Souffle”), winky food metaphors and woozy R&B love songs, with the occasional Baltimore club anthem turning on her over-the-top sense of humor (“Big Boob Bitch” is a rave hit in waiting). Earlier, she had already established herself in the young, women-centric New York rap underground with 2011’s Raw Burger and 2010’s Mymixxxytape, the latter hosted by friend and fellow up-and-coming rapper Junglepussy. Additionally, she’s downtown New York’s favorite shopgirl, recruited to work at designer Patricia Field’s legendary clothing store when a manager recognized her as a back-up dancer for Lil Mama during fashion week. Since then, Burger has performed her own fashion week shows to packed houses, often right inside Patricia Field.
What She’s Doing Next: More shows and videos off In Ya Mouf!, Burger also has plans to parlay her fashion and beauty know-how into a new online boutique called Mommy’z Closet, as well as a lipstick line and nail polish collection (she does lipstick tutorials and paints nails as well).
What She Says: “A lot of people didn’t get the whole Dai Burger brand at first, but it seems they’re learning. I love saying things people wouldn’t normally say and being out of the box – I’ve learned laughter is therapy for our soul,” she says. “It really has been hard being different and standing by it for so long, but I’m still standing for my independence as a female artist, trying my best to steer clear of stereotypes, comparisons, and outright hatred at times. The goal is to make awesome music while looking fly as hell doing so!”
