Third Man Celebrates White Stripes’ ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ in Latest Vault Package
Jack White‘s Third Man Records will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the White Stripes‘ fifth LP Get Behind Me Satan with the label’s 23rd Vault package, which is centered around Under Amazonian Lights, a double LP and live DVD capturing the duo’s June 1st, 2005 concert in Manaus, Brazil.
Recorded at the the Teatro Amazonas Opera House — and reportedly the venue’s first ever rock concert — Under Amazonian Lights boasts a setlist stacked with White Stripes classics including “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “My Doorbell,” “Fell in Love With a Girl,” “Seven Nation Army” and two renditions of “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” — one electric, one acoustic. The duo also busted out covers of Bob Dylan’s “Love Sick” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked for Water.” The accompanying DVD includes plenty of footage from the show itself, but also features a special clip of Meg and Jack performing “We Are Going to Be Friends” outside the Opera House for the hordes who couldn’t get tickets.
Along with Under Amazonian Lights, the latest Vault offering also includes a 7-inch single that features an early White solo offering recorded around 2000 called “Let You Down.” White handled all the instrumentation, as well as the multi-tracked four-part harmonies. The lyrics — “No I’m never, no I’m never, no I’m never gonna let you down now” — were later repurposed for the White Stripes‘ track “The Nurse.” The B-side contains a long-forgotten White Stripes instrumental outtake “Ain’t No Sweeter Than Rita Blues,” which was recorded during the Get Behind Me Satan sessions.
Third Man is also offering some unique bonus items, including a collection of postcards designed by Grammy-winner Rob Jones celebrating the White Stripes’ 2005 Brazil shows; a silk-screened poster with secret glow-in-the-dark graphics; and a “death head monkey” also designed by Jones that was turned into an enamel pin. The whole thing comes packaged in a telescoping box bearing the same monkey graphic.
After spending most of 2014 on the road in support of his latest solo album, Lazaretto, White has a handful of live dates scheduled for 2015, including a number of festival dates in South America. He is also scheduled to headline this year’s Coachella festival in April.
