Watch Blake Shelton, Ashley Monroe’s Steamy Duet on ‘The Voice’
Though it was Team Adam’s night to perform on The Voice Monday night, Blake Shelton — with a little help from Ashley Monroe — was intent on proving just why he’s worthy of his reign in the judge’s chair. The duo performed a version of their sweet duet ballad “Lonely Tonight,” while the audience waved their arms in the air and the contestants most likely looked on with nervous stomachs.
Shelton, who has been a Voice champion three times, currently has only one surviving team member — Nashville’s honkytonking dad Craig Wayne Boyd, who covered Merle Haggard and the classic hymn “Old Rugged Cross” in a metal-meets-country-meets-gospel belt that brought Gwen Stefani to tears. Shelton’s lost some standouts along the way, including Taylor Brashears, a fiddle player with a high octane, old-school voice, and the Lorde-leaning Jessie Pitts.
Monroe, however, has been busy of late, working on her new album and becoming as omnipresent a duet partner as Emmylou Harris — prior to last night’s Voice appearance, she sang with Eric Church at CMT Artist of the Year’s Merge Haggard tribute.
“It’s almost done!” Monroe tells Rolling Stone County about her upcoming LP, produced by Vince Gill and Justin Niebank. “I’m already listening to it in my car. We’ve got all the songs, but we’re still fine-tuning it. I’m a co-writer on every track. I listen to other songs, too, but I feel songs a different way when I write them.”
Feeling them, and, as the singer of “Weed Instead of Roses,” maybe smoking them just a little too.
