Exclusive: Go Behind the Scenes of the Cadillac Three’s New Video
If the members of country-grunge trio the Cadillac Three look particularly well lit in the video for their new single, “Party Like You,” there’s good reason. Singer-guitarist Jaren Johnston says he and bandmates Neil Mason and Kelby Ray passed time during set-ups by doing what they do best: emptying six-packs.
“We basically just drank beer all day long and they filmed it. It was like a day in the life of the Cadillac Three,” says Johnston with a good-natured cackle. He’s calling from the band’s bus, which is ferrying the group back to Nashville in time for their performance at a radio-station-sponsored concert on Wednesday. The members prefer playing over acting.
“We don’t really like [making videos] very much. It’s so tedious. We got home at like 4 that morning, slept until 8 and then we filmed all day long. The makeup and all that shit, man, we kind of don’t like it,” Johnston continues. “But the people who have worked with us on [the video] have been really good. They let us do our thing, we drank beer for 12 hours and then got on the bus and left.”
The clip was filmed in the burgeoning yet still-rough-around-the-edges East Nashville neighborhood, not far from where Johnston raised hell as a teenager. “I grew up about a mile from where we were filming,” he says of the locations, which included popular dive bar FooBar and the parking lot of a tire shop.
The finished video, which premieres Wednesday, features some attractive girls, a vintage sports car (its— according to Johnston — “douche” driver) and, inexplicably, a rooster.
“It’s all of those elements of debauchery from a crazy night, all these little subplots that don’t make sense,” Johnston says. “And us filming it were I grew up running around as a kid was pretty perfect.”
